Abram sits south of Hindley Green, about ten minutes from our base. It is another of the old colliery villages in this part of Wigan borough, and its housing splits fairly neatly into two groups: the older terraced and estate stock built around the pits, and much newer development built since on and around the reclaimed colliery land toward Bickershaw.
Solid brick terraces and mid-century estate housing. On the older terraces the flue has to be cored through solid wall and sited clear of windows, doors and neighbouring boundaries. Back boilers still turn up behind fireplaces, and where they do the old unit and flue come out, the fireplace is made good and the boiler is relocated, usually to the kitchen. The modern housing around Abram and Bickershaw is a completely different job. Cavity walls, a combi already sited in the kitchen, utility or garage, a clean flue route and decent pipework. These are usually straightforward same-day swaps and among the simplest installs we do.
